The planning application for the Cambridge Mosque is now available to view online at the Cambridge City Council’s website. This is also your opportunity to make an official comment in support of the mosque to the city planners.

Once you have reviewed the application, make your comments known by:

Visitors learn more about the new Cambridge Mosque building at the pre-planning exhibition held at the Ross St. Community Centre

The pre-planning exhibition of the new building for the Cambridge Mosque, held at the Ross Street Community Centre on September 7th, 2011, was well attended by both locals and those who had driven into the city to see what the new building will look like.

On display were various banners detailing the history of the Cambridge Mosque and the various aspects of the new design. Special attention was paid to issues of environmentally friendly design, the gardens at the front and the underground parking lot. A scale model was also included in the exhibition, giving the opportunity to visualise the building in the context of the its new neighbourhood.

Architect David Marks, from Marks Barfield Architects was on hand with members of his team to answer questions, along with members from the site project managers’, Bidwells and the Chair of the Muslim Academic Trust, Abdal Hakim Murad.

This exhibition will continue at the Abu Bakr Siddiq Mosque on Mawson Road for the next two weeks.

It will be available to view on the main floor, this week and next week, it will move upstairs to the women’s section. Please come by and see the design of the new building, view the scale model and take a moment to write any comments or concerns you may have.

A view of how the bricks will be patterned for the Cambridge Mosque

This past Ramadan, we launched the Cambridge Mosque Brick by Brick appeal, in order to raise the estimated 350,000 bricks needed to construct our new building.

Our appeal launched successfully, with people all over the world excited to contribute bricks to the Cambridge Mosque. Donations were made in person, at the bank, online, by text and through our live television appeal on Channel S.

Alhamdulillah, through our collective Ramadan efforts, we have raised £94,952.85! That is a total of 67,823 bricks raised so far – almost 20% of our total goal!

This is a wonderful start to our Brick by Brick appeal, which will be ongoing until all bricks have been donated. We continue to encourage donations and fundraising ideas. If you would like to get in touch regarding further fundraising, please contact us.

Finally, a note of thanks from our Trustee,  Shaykh Abdal Hakim, who writes:  ”The fundraising campaign this Ramadan was truly excellent. May Allah reward all those who organised things so smoothly, including Channel S and the Cambridge volunteers.  From donations pouring in through JustGiving, bank transfer, and text messages, we are gaining momentum [...]]]> With just under two weeks left before our Channel S LIVE APPEAL on Friday 26^th of August, 2011, we have raised:

 7,777 bricks and over £10,000, and counting!

 From donations pouring in through JustGiving, bank transfer, and text messages, we are gaining momentum in our goal to purchase all 350,000 bricks necessary to build the first purpose built in Cambridge and Europe’s first eco mosque.

There have already been a number of inspiring moments such as the revelation from the Ladies Urdu Circle and Qur’an school that they had raised £5,526 in just a few months for the Cambridge mosque move. Zohra Aunty and Khawja Aunty, the two tenacious women heading up the collection managed to collect five times what they had pledged. Their efforts are an inspiration and galvanising call to us all to keep pledging and buying bricks for the Cambridge Mosque move.

Similarly at the Community Iftar and Update Dinner this last Sunday, various community members all pledged between 50, 500 and 1000 bricks for the new mosque project, mashAllah! It was beautiful to see friends pledging together, husbands and wives playfully challenging each other to raise more bricks than the other and mothers and daughters making their pledges all with the intention to help build a mosque worthy of our community and our great city.

With all this momentum behind us, there is no where to go but closer to our goal and though we are getting there, we have a ways yet before the 350,000 bricks are purchased. We still need people to pledge bricks on JustGiving, set up monthly direct debits and text in their donations, as well as commit to calling in to the Channel S Live Appeal on Friday 26^th of August, 2011. Together, as a community, we can make this mosque a reality.

Sh. Abdal Hakim Murad answers questions at the Iftar Update

Thanks to all who joined us this last week at the Mawson Road mosque for a fantastic evening filled with community spirit. Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad kicked off the evening with advice on making the most of what remains of Ramadan and filling our time with reflection, prayer and remembrance of God.

Head of this years Appeal Committee, Shahid Hanif then spoke about the details of this year’s Ramadan objectives in terms of fundraising and overall plans. Shaykh Abdal Hakim then followed with an engaging presentation of the most current mosque plans and designs.

During the iftar, volunteers were overwhelmed with community members signing up to pledge, donate and call in on the night of Channel S live Appeal on the 26^th of August, 2011 from 5:00pm – 5:00am, click here for more information.
